Saint Lucia Surpasses Donation Goal in COVID-19 Relief Telethon
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has taken a social and economic toll on countries around the world. This could not be more true for developing countries including island nations like Saint Lucia that face several inherent challenges to effectively respond to this global crisis. On Sunday April 12, the Government of Saint Lucia in collaboration with various members of Saint Lucia's local entertainment industry held a national COVID-19 Response Telethon to support the country's health services, frontline staff and those most in need.
The four-hour virtual telethon aimed at raising EC$1 million (over US$370,000) was broadcasted live on Facebook and Youtube and featured performances by a star-studded line-up of local Saint Lucian performers.
The initial goal of the fundraiser was to raise EC$1 million. However, the overwhelming response from the local and international community allowed for over EC$2.5 million to be raised.
Prime Minister Allen Chastanet announced the news via the following post on his Facebook Page:

Although the telethon has ended, the campaign to support COVID-19 relief efforts in Saint Lucia will continue to run for the next 30 days until the middle of May.
