Embassy of Saint Lucia Commemorates Saint Lucia’s 43rd Anniversary of Independence in Taiwan

Embassy of Saint Lucia Press release, Feb. 22, 2022

Saint Lucia marked its 43rd anniversary of independence with a brief ceremony at its Embassy in Taipei, with the unfurling of the nation's flag by the Ambassador, Edwin Laurent and a Saint Lucian student Ms Francine Holder.

In attendance were Vice Minister Alexander Yui and other representatives from Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassadors to the R.O.C. Taiwan, nationals and specially invited guests.

Ms Bernise Springer, Second-Secretary at the Embassy presided over the ceremony, which commenced with a young Saint Lucian, Ms. Malisia Evelyn reciting a poem of reflection that she had specially composed for the occasion, entitled "Freedom".

Vice Minister Yui then congratulated Saint Lucia on its achievements and reiterated the importance to Taiwan of allies like Saint Lucia.

In his address, the Ambassador recounted how the commitment to freedom is deep in the people's DNA, and that they had always fought for it. He noted that: "We Saint Lucians greatly value our freedom. We see it, not as some exclusive privilege that we happen to enjoy, but as the inalienable right of all nations and peoples."

He stressed that Taiwan “is a good friend and partner, with whom we stand as stalwart and courageous supporters”.

The Ambassador thanked MOFA and the Ambassadors for their valuable support and friendship and then announced that his tour of duty was coming to an end. This independence anniversary ceremony would therefore be the last that he would be attending in his current capacity. The full text of the Ambassador's address can be viewed below.

.Keril Victor, a popular Saint Lucian singer in Taiwan delivered a powerful rendition of the National Anthem, after which guests joined in a celebratory toast.

The ingenious lantern that had been designed in Saint Lucia and displayed at Taipei's just concluded Lantern Festival was put on display during the event.

The timing of the commemoration at noon of the 22nd day of the 2nd of the 2022nd year, was symbolic as it exactly coincided with the midnight moment in Saint Lucia when the Island attained its independence 43 years ago.
